"Not only has my voice improved, but I had tons of fun." - Rita, a first-year singer
What we offer........
The Ann Arbor Youth Chorale offers two graded choirs.
The Descant Choir is a preparatory level choir that prepares young singers for performance and for the more rigorous demands of the Concert Choir. Children at this level show an enthusiasm for singing and an ability to match pitch.
The Concert Choir is for more experienced children who already demonstrate vocal ability, along with basic skills in note reading and singing in parts.
Each choir is dedicated to fostering excellence in musicianship. At their respective levels, children learn basic concepts of melody, rhythm, harmony, and dynamics, along with skills in vocal technique, breathing, tone production, diction, and sight singing.
Students study vocal literature from a broad range of musical styles and periods, from classical to folk, from Broadway tunes to spirituals, from the sixteenth century to the present. They are exposed to new languages, as well as the customs, beliefs, and values of the world’s cultures. In recent concerts, the choirs have performed works in Latin, Hebrew, Japanese, Serbo-Croatian, and French.
While working with professionals in a nurturing atmosphere, students realize their musical potential, experience the satisfaction of achievement, and make lasting friendships. They also develop life-long transferable skills such as discipline, critical thinking, and teamwork.
Rehearsals for the 2007-08 season are at Forsythe Middle School in Ann Arbor while the arts wing at Huron High School (our usual rehearsal space) is being renovated. Both choirs meet on Tuesdays, Concert Choir from 6 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. (with a short break) and Descant Choir 6:00-7:00 p.m. The season runs from September through May.
Tuition scholarships are available based on need.
