Summer Choral Academy
Cancelled for 2011
When we first ran the Summer Choral Academy in 2008, the students thought it was a great success. They had a ton of fun, learned more than they thought they would, and gave us lots of positive feedback. Our plan was to hold the camp again the following summer, in 2009. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, we were unable to run the program in 2009, 2010 and 2011. We hope to be able to hold the Summer Choral Academy in 2012, so any and all interest in the program is welcome. If you or someone you know is interested in the Summer Choral Academy program, please contact us by email or phone (734)996-4404.
Below is an excerpt from our 2010 brochure, to give you an idea of what the Summer Choral Academy was/will be like.
Our summer program is for boys (with unchanged voices) and girls, ages 9-14 years old. Children will need a placement interview which will be offered in the early spring of 2010. They will need to be able to match pitch, but no other preparation is required.
Each day includes two sessions of choir.
As you learn a variety of interesting songs, you will be gaining lots of musical skills, learning to work as a team, and improving your performance artistry. Older students act as mentors to younger singers, as everyone reaches a high level of expectation.
Because all arts are related, each day you will also takes classes in:
- Instrumental Music: Here you will learn to play ensemble pieces with recorders and tone bars and combine instrumental playing with singing.
- Movement class: Learn a few new moves as you create an original ensemble piece for the final concert under the guidance of an expert dance instructor.
- Music Investigation: From Camp Director, Shayla Powell, you will learn about how music is put together and all the skills a good musician needs (believe us, she knows!)
- Visual Art class: You will be making a series of original pieces that you can display and then take home.
Your camp accomplishments are then presented in a final, public performance in an evening concert on the final Friday of camp. You and your friends (not to mention your parents) will be amazed at what you have achieved!
Campers bring a packed lunch and enjoy games during daily lunch breaks.
